Born in St. Joseph, Michigan in 1965 and raised in the suburbs and radio waves of Detroit, Bob Hemenger has always been surrounded by the soulful echoes of music. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of five with the piano and embracing the saxophone by the age of ten, Bob's natural gift for music was evident early on. It is his deep love for both music and nature that has shaped his musical life spanning over four decades as a working musician.
Bob's musical prowess and dedication to his craft have led him to perform at some of the most iconic venues and festivals. A standout moment in his career was performing at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre with singer/songwriter Darrell Scott. Over the years, Bob has shared the main stage with world-renowned musicians, including Victor Wooten, Darrell Scott, Zac Brown Band, Peter Rowan, Band of Heathens, Elephant Revival, the Infamous StringDuster and many more. His role as an “artist at large” has seen him collaborate with numerous bands at various festivals, creating magical moments with talents like Molly Tuttle, George Porter Jr.. He possesses a rare ability to seamlessly integrate into any musical ensemble, allowing the music itself to take center stage and simply take over.

For nearly two decades, Bob has been an instructor at Victor Wooten's Center for Music and Nature, where he has inspired countless musicians with his unique blend of musical expression and a deep appreciation and understanding for the natural world. His teaching career extends beyond music, as he has dedicated 28 years to educating high school students in Special Education, Wilderness Skills, Natural History as well as directing an Alternative High School/Dropout Recovery program. Bob's innovative approach led to the creation of The Americana Project, a successful high school program that supports students with “singing their songs” self expression, self confidence and performance.
His passion for music goes beyond performance and teaching. As the host of the radio show "Close Enough for Jazz", he has spent the last three years bringing the rich and diverse sounds of jazz to his listeners. Each Sunday evening, Bob curates two hours of jazz, offering an upbeat, groovy first hour perfect for dancing and a mellow second hour ideal for relaxation. His show is not just about music but also about sharing the stories and history behind the tunes, making jazz accessible and engaging for all.
